Hyun-kyung Park “Don’t use your wrist when putting… “Practice with a tee between your wrist and grip” [Golf Music]

“It is important to keep your body still when putting. The same goes for your wrists. Practicing with a tee between your wrist and putter grip will help you build strong wrists.”

Park Hyun-kyung (23), who won her fourth career win in two years and five months at the SK Networks/Seoul Economic Daily Ladies Classic on the Korea Ladies Professional Golf (KLPGA) Tour last month, is one of the best putt players on the current tour. She has maintained her top ranking, averaging 1st - 2nd - 4th place in putts for the three years from 2021 to this year.

Even in the SK Networks/Seoul Economic Daily Ladies Classic, where she shed tears after winning the championship for the first time in a long time, what stood out was her putt. The fairway landing rate was tied for 36th (83.93%), and the green hit rate was not very high, tied for 21st (75%), but it ranked tied for 5th place (1.61 strokes) in average putt. Thanks to the putt landing properly in the hole at the right time, he was able to escape the long-standing situation he had been experiencing for a long time.

Park Hyun-kyung says that the most important 오피쓰 thing to increase the success rate of putting is to get the ‘distance’ right. Park Hyun-kyung revealed her secret, “I have my own putt stroke size determined by meter, from 1m to over 10m.” Putt strokes are made by setting the stroke size and force in 1m units. For example, when making a putt 3m away, during the backswing, remove the club head only to the inside of the right foot of the two addressed feet and then make a stroke. When making a 5m putt, remove the club head to the outside of the right foot and then make a stroke. Hyun-kyung Park said, “You must establish your own stroke size for each distance to get an accurate sense of distance.”

Hyun-kyung Park also advised that a ‘confident touch’ is important. Hyun-kyung Park said, “A stroke that looks like rubbing the putter face against the ball is never good. “This check here is what happens when you don’t make a confident stroke,” he said. Park Hyun-kyung explained to prepare two tees to prevent such strokes. After creating a gap where the ball can fit, place a tee at the top and bottom and practice hitting the tee. Hyun-kyung Park said, “This is a way to practice only impact without follow-through,” adding, “When you hit the tee, follow-through occurs naturally, and you can also practice making impact with confidence.”

Hyun-kyung Park said, “The reason I do this kind of practice is because it helps with direction. “If I don’t hit the putt confidently, I’m more likely to hit a slant more than the line I saw, but if I make a confident stroke, the ball rolls with more force thanks to the precise impact,” she explained.

Amateur golfers must be especially careful to keep their head and wrists still. Park Hyun-kyung said, “Even though the swing of a putt is very small compared to a shot, many people move their bodies left and right. “If your body shakes, it is difficult to hit the ball in the sweet spot,” he said, emphasizing that “you must make a stroke without your head moving.”

Hyun-kyung Park's unique practice method for golfers whose wrists move a lot during strokes was also revealed. Park Hyun-kyung said, “Ever since I was on the national team, when I held the putter grip, I practiced putting with a tee between the inside of my left wrist and the putter grip. When your wrist shakes, the tee between your wrist and the grip falls out. “If you are conscious of not dropping the tee, your wrist will naturally become fixed,” she explained.
